Guide

Approach and anchoring

Sandy Bay opens to the north and east, so approach is straightforward in settled weather but the anchorage stays exposed to those quarters. The high land of Cape Ann to the south and Halibut Point to the west give a useful lee in prevailing summer winds. Anchoring is protected from west through south to south-east; sand gives reliable holding.

Practical

The Sandy Bay Yacht Club at Rockport manages local moorings through the harbour master. Annisquam Yacht Club lies 2.7 nm to the west with launch service and transient moorings. Town shops, fuel and provisions are in Rockport.

History

In the 1880s Congress authorised a 9,000-foot breakwater to turn Sandy Bay into a harbour of refuge. Work was abandoned in the early 1900s well over budget. The unfinished structure now sits as a submerged man-made reef that draws schooling fish.
