Approach and anchoring

Enter Gloucester Harbour past Eastern Point Light, then between the Dog Bar Breakwater marks R 2DB and G 1DB. The inner harbour carries depths of 15 to 24 feet. The approaches have broken ground, rocks and unmarked ledges, so careful navigation is needed in poor visibility. Harbourmaster on VHF channel 14.

Practical

Inner harbour mooring field with 30 moorings and a dinghy dock at the harbourmaster's office. The harbourmaster runs a free launch service and pump-out by boat. Marinas along the channel include Pier 7, Brown's Yacht Yard and the Sport Fishing Dock. The anchorage between the North and South channels holds 15 feet at low water over mud.

Ashore

Schooners Adventure, Ardelle and Thomas E. Lannon sail from the inner harbour on day trips. Seafood restaurants, museums and the Rocky Neck art colony are within walking distance of the waterfront marinas.

History

Gloucester has worked the fishing grounds since 1623, making it one of the oldest fishing ports in the United States. The Man at the Wheel memorial on Stacy Boulevard honours the thousands of local fishermen lost at sea.
