Private sailing club on the Annisquam River at Annisquam village, Gloucester, Massachusetts, founded in 1896.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The Annisquam River runs from Gloucester Harbour to Ipswich Bay through a marked federal channel about 4.5 miles long, dredged to 8 feet at mean lower low water. The northern entrance from Ipswich Bay is straight and well marked but turns choppy in a strong northerly against the ebb. The Blynman Canal at the southern end runs up to 6 to 7 knots on the ebb. VHF 68.
Practical
Member-based club with moorings on the river; the channel carries roughly 4 feet at average low water, so deeper-draught boats should time the tide. Annisquam village shops are within walking distance of the club.
History
Annisquam village dates to a first European settlement in 1631. In the 19th century it lived on granite quarrying and grew an artist colony that drew painters such as George Loftus Noyes and Margaret Fitzhugh Browne.
