Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south-west across the Golfe d'Ajaccio. Bottom of sand and posidonia seagrass, anchor on bare sand patches in about 8 to 10 m to hold and to comply with the anchoring rules of the Ajaccio gulf. The bottom shoals quickly towards the beach. Shelter from NW, N and NE. Fully exposed to the libeccio from SW and to southerly swell entering the gulf, and it rolls whenever motorboats pass.

Practical

No services at anchor. Port Tino Rossi 4.5 NM east in Ajaccio for water, fuel, electricity and town provisions. Dingy Dock 4.7 NM east for landing by tender.

Ashore

Beach restaurants line the shore behind the anchorage, with a bus on the nearby coast road for the shops, though it carries some traffic noise. Îles Sanguinaires and the Tour de la Parata at the tip of the headland, Genoese watchtower from 1608 on red porphyry rock, listed site. Coastal path from the Parata car park to the tower, about 1.5 km return. Beaches of Marinella and Saint-Antoine to the east.

History

The Îles Sanguinaires owe their name to the red glow of their porphyry cliffs at sunset. Alphonse Daudet stayed in the lighthouse of the Grande Sanguinaire in 1863 and drew from it the short story Le Phare des Sanguinaires in his Lettres de mon moulin.
