Approach and anchoring

Commercial waterway with cargo traffic, monitor VHF 10 on the Seine. Two mooring options lie off the main channel: a concrete dock that is very shallow and hard to lie against even with 1.3 m draught, and a small floating pontoon better suited to smaller craft and to boats using the launching slipway. The pontoon is delicate in strong wind and exposed to the wash of passing barges. Better suited to boats of moderate size or smaller.

Practical

No water, electricity or shops here, but a rubbish skip is available. Port de Venables 1.1 NM NE with pontoons, water and electricity. Quai public de Muids 1.3 NM NE for a short public stopover alongside.

Ashore

Château Gaillard above Les Andelys, fortress built by Richard the Lionheart in 1196 and 1197 on a chalk spur overlooking the Seine, about 3 km from the river by road. Église Saint-Sauveur in Petit Andely dates from the 13th century. Marked riverside footpath along the Seine loop.

History

Richard the Lionheart raised Château Gaillard in barely two years to block the French royal advance down the Seine. The fortress fell to Philippe Auguste in 1204 after a long siege and the loss of Normandy to the French crown followed within months.
