Guide

Approach and anchoring

Approach from the NE across the Golfe de Saint-Tropez, entered between Cap Camarat to the S and Cap Saint-Pierre to the N. Nearer the harbour the bottom is thick mud with good holding, weed and sand patches elsewhere. A marked no-anchor zone over the posidonia in the shallows is sometimes enforced, so drop in about 13 to 16 metres to stay clear, and watch an underwater cable and old chains on the bottom near the harbour when weighing. Anchoring with an anchor at the bow and one at the stern helps hold against the water taxi wash. Shelter from E through S to SW, well protected in an east wind; open to the N and NE, untenable in a tramontane. Beware of heavy summer traffic and the seaplane landing area.

Practical

Land the dinghy at the small fishing port about 100 m away, which takes tenders but is very shallow, or tie at the end of a harbour pontoon on request. Water available on the quays of Saint-Tropez harbour. Port du Pilon 0.1 NM SE for small craft berths. Port de Saint-Tropez 0.3 NM NE for 734 berths, fuel, chandlery and all services, with the capitainerie on VHF 9.

Ashore

Musée de l'Annonciade 300 m from the harbour holds paintings by Signac, Matisse and Bonnard in a former 16th century chapel. Citadelle de Saint-Tropez 600 m E above the port, built in 1602, houses the Musée d'Histoire Maritime. Place des Lices 400 m inland for the Tuesday and Saturday market.

History

Saint-Tropez took its name from the Roman martyr Torpes of Pisa, beheaded under Nero in 68 AD. The town was a fishing port until Paul Signac settled here in 1892 and drew Matisse, Derain and Bonnard, who painted the bay at the start of the 20th century.
