Inland marina on the Vilaine, 160 berths, at the junction with the Nantes-Brest canal in southern Brittany.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from the sea via the Arzal lock on the Vilaine, then 40 km upstream. Maximum draught 2 m, though the entrance between the buoys is the shallowest point where deep-keeled boats can touch, so keep clear of the buoy on one side when coming onto the visitor pontoon; at some berths a 1.7 m draught can sit in the mud. No tidal constraint above Arzal. VHF 9 for the harbourmaster.
Practical
160 berths on pontoons in a freshwater basin, with renewed heated sanitary facilities, hot showers and a washing machine and dryer; rates rose after the Compagnie des Ports du Morbihan took over. Fuel berth and a black water pump-out in the outer harbour, water and electricity at pontoons, and a long extension lead is useful. SNCF railway station 400 m from the port with direct trains to Rennes and Nantes.
Ashore
Old town with half-timbered houses around the Saint-Sauveur abbey church, 500 m from the pontoons. Weekly market on Monday morning, place du Parlement. Canal towpath open to walkers and cyclists towards Rennes and Nantes.
History
Redon grew around the Saint-Sauveur abbey founded in 832 by Saint Conwoion. The town became a strategic inland port after the opening of the Nantes-Brest canal in 1842.
