Approach and anchoring

Reached via the tidal Vilaine from the Arzal dam lock, then upstream through the Cran bend. No tidal constraint once above the dam since the river is held at a constant level. VHF 9 for the harbour master.

Practical

25 berths along a single pontoon, water and shore power available, WiFi paid by the hour. The harbour office is at the campsite behind the A Bon Porc restaurant and sells fresh bread each morning, basic provisions and local information; showers and toilets are shared with the campsite. A bar-pizzeria stands on the quay. Berths are limited, so call ahead. Village shops within 300 m, with a baker, pharmacy and post office; Redon with full supplies and a rail station is 3 NM upstream.

Ashore

Old quay and church of Saint-Melaine in the village. Towpath walks along the Vilaine toward Saint-Jean-la-Poterie. Château des Rohan ruins on the rocky spur above the river.

History

Rieux was a medieval stronghold of the Rohan family, guarding the Vilaine crossing between Brittany and the Duchy of Nantes. The castle was dismantled in the 15th century.
