Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the S or SE into the Gulf of Valinco. Pick up one of the 31 mooring buoys, fitted with a wide high ring that is easy to catch and strongly laid; anchoring is not allowed. Sand bottom with posidonia patches. Sheltered from NW, N, NE and W, exposed to the south and to the libeccio swell from the SW, and the buoys along the seawall roll with the wash of boats leaving the harbour. VHF channel 9.
Practical
Buoys cost roughly 16 to 39 euros a night depending on season, often charged whatever the boat size, paid on board by card when the marinero comes round or booked by phone or through PortEresa. The office closes 12:30 to 15:30, and a buoy carrying a fender is already reserved. Water on the quay for about 1 euro per 15 minutes, so call first to check the pontoon is free. Dinghies can be left in the harbour. Spar and Proxi supermarkets by the beach, both well stocked with a butcher and delicatessen. The charted fuel symbol is misleading, so refuel at Propriano 5.1 nm to the E.
Ashore
Porto-Pollo village sits 0.1 nm to the SW with restaurants, a dive centre and the beachside restaurant La Paillote Capriona, reservations on 0784403862. Filitosa prehistoric site with its menhir statues lies around 10 km inland; there is no public transport, but e-bikes can be hired from GS Locations Velos to reach it.
History
Filitosa, inland from the gulf, is one of the main Bronze Age and Neolithic sites in Corsica, known for its carved granite menhirs dated to the second millennium BC.
