Approach and anchoring

Reached via the 3.2 km long Epinal branch of the Canal des Vosges, which leaves the main canal at Golbey. Lock 1 at the branch entrance and lock 2 at Epinal are automated under VNF control. Maximum draught 1.80 m, air draught 3.50 m, Freycinet gauge 38.5 m by 5.05 m. In practice the branch to the marina carries only about 1.6 m, so sound the way in and keep a margin under the keel.

Practical

Pontoon berths cost around 8 euros a night with water and shore power, on the Port d'Epinal quay by the Parc du Cours. Capitainerie open in season. There are no showers on site, the nearest public pool is about 2 km away. Bakery, supermarket and restaurants at 300 m in the town centre. SNCF station Epinal at 600 m, direct trains to Nancy in 40 minutes and Paris in 3 hours.

Ashore

Musee de l'Image at 400 m, dedicated to the Images d'Epinal popular prints since 1796. Basilica of Saint-Maurice at 500 m, 11th to 13th century Romanesque and Gothic. Parc du Chateau ruins and arboretum on the hill above the town at 1 km. Moselle river valley and Vosges mountains accessible by train from Epinal.

History

Epinal was founded around 980 by Thierry I, bishop of Metz. The Imagerie Pellerin, established in 1796, made the town synonymous with coloured popular prints, giving the French expression image d'Epinal to mean a simplified representation. The Canal des Vosges, completed in 1882, linked the Moselle to the Saone across 122 km and 93 locks.
