Approach and anchoring

Approach through the Aude mouth between Valras-Plage and Fleury. The entrance silts, especially after easterly and south-easterly gales: come in close to the green breakwater on the starboard hand, about 10 metres off the rocks, where there is around 2.5 metres, as the middle and the red port side have shoaled to under a metre. Keep to starboard into the harbour as well. Maximum draught about 2 m. Speed limit 3 knots in the river. VHF 9.

Practical

260 berths on floating pontoons, water and electricity at each berth, sanitary block and wintering area. A berth runs about 19 to 20 euros, often three nights for the price of two, with washing and drying machines and free Wi-Fi that works well. Arrive late and the office leaves a key in a locker. Provisioning is thin: a few seafood restaurants and oyster producers at the harbour head, which can fill up, a simple supermarket at the campsite about 300 m behind the capitainerie, otherwise full shopping at Valras-Plage 3 NM to the north-east, so carry stores.

Ashore

Hiking trail along the Aude to the basses plaines de l'Aude nature reserve, birdwatching area for flamingos and herons. Fishermen cabins of Les Cabanes de Fleury, listed vernacular site on the Aude bank, 200 m from the port. Saint-Pierre-la-Mer beach 2 km by road.

History

Les Cabanes de Fleury developed from a settlement of wooden fishing huts on the right bank of the Aude. The village kept its traditional single-storey reed-roofed dwellings along the river.
