Marina of 914 berths at Pornic in southern Loire-Atlantique, split between the Vieux Port under the castle and the Noëveillard basin on the Côte de Jade.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the west across the Baie de Bourgneuf, steering clear of the Banc de Kerouars to the south. The Noëveillard basin is meant to hold water at all tides, but the entrance and the ground just inside have been shoaling close to chart datum and boats have touched, so deep-draught yachts should wait about two hours either side of low water and favour the red port-hand mark on the way in. The Vieux Port dries at low water springs. Watch for oyster tables marked by yellow buoys west of the entrance. The basin is well sheltered behind a high breakwater. VHF 9.
Practical
914 berths across Noëveillard and the Vieux Port, around 31 euros a day. Water, electricity on pontoons, diesel at the fuel berth, 45 tonne travel-lift and boatyard at Noëveillard. Showers are dated but the laundry has a newer washer and dryer, and the office and facilities are a walk from the far pontoons, where deeper-draught boats berth on short catways. The town centre is a 10 to 20 minute walk and the nearest large supermarket 25 to 35 minutes, with electric bikes for hire and free town buses. Chandler on site.
Ashore
Sentier des Douaniers starts at the castle and runs to Sainte-Marie-sur-Mer at 4 km along the Côte de Jade cliffs. Plage de la Source at 300 metres from Noëveillard, plage du Château under the castle walls. Thermes Marins seawater spa at 1 km. Faïencerie de Pornic pottery open to visitors, a local tradition since 1947. Restaurants line the marina, among them Bernie's for fish and chips, and a market fills the upper town on Saturdays.
History
The castle was built in the twelfth century by the barons of Retz. Bluebeard, Gilles de Rais, held it in the fifteenth century. The town grew into a seaside resort after Gustave Flaubert spent a summer here in 1847 and wrote about it in his Voyage en Bretagne.
