Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east across the Rade d'Hyères, clear water up to the shore, but the east side of the port entrance shoals to under 1.7 metres, so keep to the channel buoys. Sheltered from SE, S and SW, open to the mistral from NW and to easterly swell. Bottom is sand and posidonia, holding poor on the weed, so drop on clear sand, better towards the beach; the posidonia is protected, use a weighted chain. The mooring buoys are private, held by owners under permit, so do not pick one up without their agreement.
Practical
Anchorage only, no services on site. Land a tender at the small beach by the port entrance. A Spar supermarket is about 1.2 km away. La Madrague de Giens at 0.2 NM W has a small harbour with visitor places and a slipway; Port du Niel 0.6 NM SE is a pocket fishing harbour. Bus 68 to La Badine connects with bus 67 to Hyères for about 1.40 euro, and Giens holds a market on Tuesday mornings.
Ashore
Sentier du littoral runs along the cliffs from Pointe de l'Ermitage south to Port du Niel and north to La Madrague. Wild coves accessible by foot along the way. Salins des Pesquiers and the pink flamingos of the Hyères salt marshes lie across the tombolo on the west side of the peninsula.
