Approach and anchoring

Approach from the south by rounding the Pointe du Niel. The bay opens between Port du Niel and the Pointe des Chevaliers. Sand and rock bottom, so drop on clear sand patches in 5 to 8 m to hold well and avoid fouling the anchor and damaging Posidonia. Watch a drying 0.7 m patch off the eastern exit of the bay that is not charted. Sheltered from N, NE and NW winds. Exposed to the south and to swell running up from the east, which can roll the anchorage even in light airs.

Practical

Forain anchorage with no services. Small craft pontoon at Port du Niel 0.3 nm west for landing by tender. Port Auguier lies 0.7 nm SE on the other side of the peninsula as a bad-weather fallback.

Ashore

The beach at the eastern end is public but sits inside the grounds of the Hôpital Renée Sabran; tenders may land there but not cross the grounds to reach the shops, so land the tender at Port du Niel, where it can be left for the day, for a pharmacy, bakery and small supermarket about 300 m away. Tombolo west beach of Giens and the salt marsh of Les Pesquiers are reached on foot from Port du Niel in about 20 minutes. Sentier du littoral follows the rocky coast east towards La Madrague.
