Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Gulf of Saint-Florent on a NW heading. Sand bottom visible through clear water, drop the hook in 2 to 5 m. Keep clear of the swimming zone marked by yellow buoys in summer. Shelter from W, SW and S. Exposed to the Libeccio when it veers NW and to the Tramontane from the N.
Practical
No water or fuel. Tender landing on the sand; the wooden pier and its buoyed channel are reserved for the passenger shuttles, so anchor and land clear of it to avoid the wake. From roughly 8 am to 8 pm in season a steady stream of shuttles, tour boats and water taxis throws up wash across the anchorage, which empties and turns calm only in the evening and early morning. The shuttle Le Popeye runs from Saint-Florent several times a day. Nearest full services at Saint-Florent 3.7 NM SE.
Ashore
The beach sits between two headlands inside the Agriates protected zone, with no road or village behind it. A seasonal beach restaurant, La Cabane, serves lunch only and takes bookings; cows often wander the sand at either end. The Sentier du Littoral heads west to Saleccia in about 1 hour, and a marked track climbs inland toward Pointe Mortella 2 km north.
Story
The name Loto comes from the Corsican lotu, meaning mud, a reference to the seasonal brackish pond behind the dunes that dries out in summer.
