Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the Gulf of Saint-Florent heading west past Punta Mortella and Cala di l'Acciolu, keeping to the correct line into the bay as rocks lie on the port side. The sandy shelf shoals gradually towards the beach; drop the hook on clean sand in 3 to 6 metres and avoid the dark patch of flat stones in the centre, which is shallow with poor holding. No buoys, no facilities. Shelter from S, SW and SE, but Libeccio and northerly swell make it untenable, so plan an overnight only in settled weather.
Ashore
Ghignu is inside the Conservatoire du Littoral's Désert des Agriates and sits on the Sentier du Littoral between Saleccia and Malfalcu. Restored shepherds' huts, the paillers, stand just behind the beach. Wild cattle graze the beach, and the coastal path leads west to the Plage de Trave. No road, no shops; the nearest village is Casta, about 12 km inland by 4x4 track.
History
The Agriates were farmed in stone-walled fields until the early 20th century and left to the maquis after rural depopulation. The coast was bought by the Conservatoire du Littoral from 1979 onwards to block a planned seaside resort development.
