Approach and anchoring

Access from the Mediterranean through the Canal des Onglous at the Pointe des Onglous, then across the étang de Thau. No tide. Watch for the shellfish tables marked by white posts in the lagoon. Wind from the tramontane builds short chop quickly. A low bridge on the way out to open water limits air draught to under 2 metres.

Practical

500 berths. Harbour office on the quay. Water and electricity on the pontoons. A dry-stack yard hauls and launches boats, with self-service launching for craft under 7 metres and moderate rates. Launching stops between 1200 and 1400, and boats to be lifted out for the night should be back before 2000. Village of Marseillan within walking distance for bakery, grocery and restaurants. Port Eden adjoining to the NW.

Ashore

Village of Marseillan 400 m away, with the historic Noilly Prat cellars open to visit on quai Antonin Gros. Marseillan Plage on the Mediterranean side 0.4 NM SE, reachable by road or along the lagoon shore. Shellfish farms of the étang de Thau produce Bouzigues oysters, tasted directly at the producers around the lagoon.

History

Marseillan is a former Greek trading post on the étang de Thau. The Noilly Prat vermouth house was founded in Marseillan in 1813 and still ages its wine outdoors on the quay, a process visible on the cellar tour.
