Approach and anchoring
Approach from the east along the coast from Ventimiglia, or from the west past the Menton Vieux-Port. Entrance between two moles, with harbour lights on the heads. Maximum draught 2.5 metres, though sand sedimentation shoals the entrance and it can carry less, so deep-draught boats should sound in with care. VHF 9 for the harbour office. Watch for easterly swell which can make the entrance uncomfortable.
Practical
750 berths on pontoons with a dedicated visitor area. Fuel berth with diesel and petrol. Water and electricity at each berth, sanitary blocks with showers. A large U supermarket stands at the marina exit, with a bakery and small shops within 200 metres, and the chandlery AD Nautica can order most parts. The harbour office and Menton town centre lie about 20 minutes on foot from the visitor berths, so call the office for a lift when coming to pay, or take the free buses on the main road.
Ashore
Jardin Serre de la Madone, a botanical garden listed as a Monument historique, sits 1.5 km uphill from the port. The Italian market of Ventimiglia, open on Fridays, lies 3 km east on foot via the coastal road. Menton old town with the Jean Cocteau museum is reachable in 20 minutes on foot along the seafront.
History
Garavan developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as an area of winter villas favoured by British residents, including the writer Katherine Mansfield who stayed there in 1920. The marina itself was inaugurated in 1975.
