Marina of 180 berths in Balagne, north-west Corsica, sharing the basin with a ferry terminal serving the mainland.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the north-west leaving the Île de la Pietra and its lighthouse to port. Maximum draught 3.75 m. Watch for ferry traffic on the entry line. Visitor berths lie along a very high concrete quay on the outside of the harbour, so a passerelle is needed to land, one is lent by the office, and the quay is exposed to N, NE and E wind and swell that make it roll; reservations are sometimes cancelled in strong northerlies. VHF 9 for the harbourmaster.
Practical
180 berths on pontoons. Fuel berth with diesel. Water and electricity at pontoons. Berths are among the most expensive in Corsica, often 80 to 100 euros for a 12 m boat in season, and bookings are often not confirmed. A ZMEL buoy field to the south-east charges around 20 to 25 euros, cannot be reserved and is released by 14:00, so it fills quickly. Shops, restaurants and a market are 200 m away in the town centre, with a launderette near the Tommasini bakery and grocery delivery from Auchan. SNCF station with the Balagne tramway to Calvi next to the port.
Ashore
Covered market hall built in 1850, 150 m from the pontoons, open every morning. Genoese tower on the Île de la Pietra, accessible on foot by the causeway from the port, 800 m. Beaches of Napoleon and Bodri within 1 km.
History
L'Île-Rousse was founded in 1758 by Pascal Paoli to give independent Corsica a trading port free from Genoese control. Its original name Paolina honoured the leader of the Corsican Republic.
