Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the sound from the south, leaving the north and south cardinals; the visitor buoys are the first yellow ones just inside. Pick up two buoys fore and aft, compulsory, and raft no more than three head-to-tail so masts do not clash in the strong tidal stream; the buoys by the pier are private, kept for ferries and locals. Range tops 12 m on springs and the shore dries far out, so approach near high water; on big coefficients the inner line takes the ground, only the outer buoys staying afloat, as little as 1.5 to 1.9 m at low water. A powerful dinghy is essential in the current. Assistance and buoy hire on VHF 9. No shelter from easterly winds.
Practical
15 mooring buoys with water on site, paying in season since 2021 at about 10 to 12 euros a night. There is no harbour office; a mariner comes round to collect and to help on the buoys. Land at a concrete slip northwest of the ferry pier, or tie briefly at the pier. Closest refuge is Hérel marina in Granville 9.3 NM east, through the lock at HW. Port Picain 10.8 NM south.
Ashore
The island has a hotel restaurant with good food, a small shop for essentials, a fine sandy beach and paths to walk round. Watch the sea marks closely, as they cover rocks that disappear at high water; a yacht was seen aground on one.
