Approach and anchoring

Sheltered from N, NE, E, S and SE. Exposed to westerlies and to the libeccio. Approach between granite reefs on the SHOM chart, the Bouches de Bonifacio are strewn with drying rocks and need visual pilotage in good light. Several rocks lie just below the surface across the entrance, visible by day; some crews report two on the east side that are not charted. The bottom is mostly weed and rock with little sand, so aim carefully for a clear sand patch.

Practical

Mouillage forain only, no services on the island. Sant'Amanza 3 NM NW and Bonifacio 4.6 NM W for provisions, water and diesel.

Ashore

Île Cavallo sits inside the Parc marin international des Bouches de Bonifacio, created in 1999 jointly with the Parco di La Maddalena on the Sardinian side. Anchoring on posidonia is prohibited by prefectoral order, sand patches are marked on the chart. The island is private and shore access is limited to the public foreshore. A farm restaurant about 10 minutes' walk from the cove is on the expensive side. Roman granite quarries remain visible on the north coast.
