Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the N between Île Lavezzi and Île de Cavallo, with granite boulders on both sides and rocks close to the surface, so come in by eye in good light. Anchor only inside a square formed by four buoys of the same colour, on sand in 3 to 5 metres, the white buoys are reserved and rangers move boats off them. The whole cove is closed to vessels over 15 metres. A shoal shows under 2 metres about 50 m before Cala di Giunco in line with the lighthouse. Swell enters with S to SW winds.
Practical
No services on the island. Tour boats pack the cove from about 10am to 6pm and rangers patrol from around 8am, so it is calm only in the evening and early morning. Landing is easy on the right-hand side of the beach. Bonifacio 5 NM NW, Sant'Amanza 4.2 NM N.
Ashore
The Île Lavezzi is uninhabited and part of the Réserve naturelle des Bouches de Bonifacio created in 1999. Marked footpaths cross the island to the cemetery of the wreck of La Sémillante, a French frigate lost here in 1855 with 773 men on board.
History
La Sémillante sank on the rocks of the Lavezzi on 15 February 1855 during a storm, on passage from Toulon to Crimea. There were no survivors. Two walled cemeteries on the island hold the recovered remains.
