Guide
Approach and anchoring
Access from the rade de Brest through the main channel. The marina entrance lies east of the commercial harbour, reached from the Pointe des Espagnols buoy heading ENE. Entry is available at all tides. Cardinal and lateral marks light the approach. Keep clear of naval traffic bound for the Île Longue base. VHF channel 9.
Practical
Around 1460 berths, with visitor places marked Vis on the pontoon pillars. Self-service fuel paid by card, water, electricity, showers and a laundry, and a boatyard with a 35 tonne travelift, a free careening slipway and winter storage. The marina is a Transeurope Marinas member, about 36 euros a night and half price for members, lends bikes, and the supermarket manager drives crews there and back by car for free. Bus line 3 to Brest centre, 4 km. The visitor pontoons have drawn complaints of anglers using the coded gate and leaving fish waste, though reports vary.
Ashore
Océanopolis aquarium 400 metres from the marina, with sections on polar, tropical and Breton waters. Plage du Moulin Blanc right next to the harbour. Jardin du Conservatoire botanique national de Brest 1.2 km west, free entry. In town the Ateliers des Capucins are reached by a cable car over the shipyards, and the tramway links the centre and the Château.
History
The marina was built in the 1970s as part of the reconstruction of Brest after wartime destruction. The rade de Brest has hosted the French Atlantic naval fleet since the 17th century under Colbert and Vauban, whose fortifications still guard the narrows at Pointe du Portzic.
