Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the rade de Brest through the goulet, then head south-east to the cove. Holding is good in thick mud and has held a 35 knot squall, though the anchor can foul on stones, so beaching is not advised. Anchor clear of the channel that splits the cove. The visitor buoys marked ashore are in practice private and assigned to local owners, so plan to anchor. Shelter is in the northern sector, exposure remains to the south-west. Rostiviec 3.4 NM to the east, Brest 3.5 NM to the north.
Practical
Water available. No fuel on site, nearest services in Rostiviec or across the rade in Brest.
Ashore
Small oyster-farming cove, with a floating pontoon behind the mole for the dinghy. The bar-restaurant Le Tapecul stands by the harbour, serving only a plat du jour and closed one day a week, so book ahead as it fills days in advance. At low water the sillon can be walked to the Chapelle Saint-Adrien, and the coastal path around the south shore of the rade links the hamlets of the Plougastel-Daoulas peninsula.
History
The rade de Brest has been a French naval anchorage since Richelieu established the arsenal in 1631. Plougastel-Daoulas peninsula, which frames the cove, is known for its strawberry crop grown on the schist slopes since the 18th century.
