Guide
Approach and anchoring
Sand bottom, shelter from N, NE and NW winds, exposed from the S. Approach follows the buoyed channel of the Aulne from the rade de Brest. Watch for strong tidal streams at the bend and for drying banks on the north shore at low water, and mind the bridge and current when working up towards Le Faou.
Practical
No pontoon, so land the tender at the slipway. No services on site; Le Faou upriver has shops and a Saturday market.
Ashore
Village of Le Faou 1 NM up the rivière du Faou, with 16th century slate-roofed houses lining the square and a Saturday morning market. Abbey of Landévennec, founded in the 5th century, is reachable by dinghy or road from the anchorage.
History
The Aulne estuary was used by Brest naval timber convoys from the 17th century, supplying oak from the forêt du Cranou to the royal dockyards downstream.
