Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the south with good visibility. Scattered rocks and drying heads in the approaches, refer to SHOM 7024 for the Bouches de Bonifacio. Depths inside are shallow, mostly 2 to 3 m, and the bottom shoals fast over small sand dunes rising from 3 to 1.5 m. Watch for outcropping rocks within the anchorage, especially on the west side. Strong libeccio swell from the SW. Mistral and west winds funnel through the strait.
Practical
Forain anchorage on sand and rock. Anchor on sand patches to avoid Posidonia, which is protected; holding is good and boats have ridden out 24 knots. No services. Pianottoli-Caldarello harbour lies 2.4 NM to the NW, Bonifacio 4.1 NM to the SE for all services. Figari airport is close, with a dinghy landing at the Tonnara shelter about 1 mile off for crew changes.
Ashore
Coastline of the Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve, created in 1999. Cliffs, maquis and sandy coves reachable on foot. Village of Pianottoli-Caldarello roughly 3 km inland for basic shops.
Story
The Bouches de Bonifacio nature reserve covers 80 000 hectares and forms, with the Parco Nazionale dell'Arcipelago di La Maddalena in Sardinia, one of the largest marine protected areas of the Mediterranean.
