Camargue, Gulf of Fos and the Étang de Berre: harbours and anchorages

14 places · Camargue and Gulf of Fos

From Les Saintes-Maries to Martigues runs a low coast of sand and marsh, with Beauduc, one of the largest sand beaches in the Mediterranean. Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône sits where the Saint-Louis canal joins the gulf to the Rhône through a lock, and Port Napoléon, in the same town, has 215 berths afloat and about 1,000 ashore for winter storage. The Gulf of Fos is an industrial port with oil, gas and container terminals: keep clear of the ship channels. At Port-de-Bouc, the 6.5 km Caronte canal leads to Martigues and the Étang de Berre, 155 km² of brackish water no deeper than 9 metres, with Saint-Chamas at the far end.
