Marina of 334 berths on the Ferrières basin in Martigues, opposite the Jonquières and L'Île districts on the Canal de Caronte.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter the Canal de Caronte from the Golfe de Fos, then head east under the A55 viaduct. The marina lies on the north bank, just west of the lift bridge linking Ferrières to L'Île. Maximum draught 2.1 m, watch the depth and the current off the pontoons on the way in. There is no one on site to take lines, and berth numbers are painted on top of the pontoons, hard to read from the fairway, so boats may need to re-moor once they find their spot. To pass the lift bridge into the Étang de Berre, call at least an hour ahead.
Practical
334 berths at a low rate, around 20 to 22 euros a night, with water on the pontoons but electricity reserved for permanent holders. The capitainerie is not on site but at Port Maritima across the canal, book by phone, a berth is assigned, the harbour map is emailed, and payment is by phone or transfer. A badge for the secured pontoons is collected there and returned by post. All shops, bakeries and supermarkets within 300 m along cours du 4 Septembre. A free maritime shuttle and a 1 euro bus serve the town, railway station 600 m with direct trains to Marseille.
Ashore
The painters' viewpoint of Le Miroir aux Oiseaux sits on the L'Île quarter 400 m from the berths, across the Saint Sebastien bridge. Musée Ziem on boulevard du 14 Juillet 500 m from the marina holds works by Félix Ziem and Provençal painters. Étang de Berre shoreline path starts at the western end of the canal. The Italian restaurant Gusto faces the pontoons.
History
Martigues formed in 1581 from the union of three fishing villages, Jonquières, L'Île and Ferrières, separated by the channels linking the Étang de Berre to the Mediterranean. The town drew Félix Ziem, Corot and later the Fauves who painted the canals in the late 19th century.
