Boatyard and marina at Port-Saint-Louis-du-Rhône, at the mouth of the Rhône on the Golfe de Fos, 215 berths, Bouches-du-Rhône.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from the Golfe de Fos through the Saint-Louis lock, which connects the sea to the Canal Saint-Louis. The lock opens on demand during working hours. Inside the basin, max draught 4,5 m. VHF 9 for the capitainerie. Strong mistral funnels down the Rhône delta from the north.
Practical
215 berths afloat on pontoons, plus a large dry storage yard and a full range of marine trades for wintering and repair. Travel lift up to 45 tonnes, chandlery, sailmaker and riggers on site. Water, showers and laundry, the sanitary block open around the clock; electricity is metered separately and reported as dear. There is no help with berthing, which is tricky in a strong mistral. Fuel berth inside the marina. The site is isolated, with no bus or train and no shop within walking distance, so a bike helps; an Intermarche is about a 20 minute ride and a taxi to Marseille Provence airport, 50 km off, runs 130 to 170 euros. Mosquitoes are heavy at dusk, and some older boats have been refused winter storage on age grounds.
Ashore
The on-site restaurant Les Trois Voiles is good and reasonably priced. Réserve naturelle des Coussouls de Crau and the Camargue regional park lie within 10 km, both Natura 2000 sites, and pink flamingos gather on the delta in winter. Village centre of Port-Saint-Louis is 2 km with all shops. Plage Napoléon, a Camargue sand beach, is 6 km by road.
History
Port Napoléon was developed as a yard specialising in the preparation and refit of offshore racing yachts from the 1990s. It has serviced Class40 and IMOCA campaigns and is used as a winter base by many cruisers heading to the Balearics or crossing to the Atlantic via the Canal du Midi.
