Anchorage in Whitehall Bay, on the western shore of Chesapeake Bay about 7.5 miles east of Annapolis, Maryland.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
The entrance is deep but narrow, with shoals on either side, so follow the channel markers closely and watch for crab pots. General depths inside run from 13 to 6 feet over a mud bottom. The bay is sheltered from north-west through east, open to the south, where southerly winds and powerboat wash can leave the anchorage choppy.
Practical
Whitehall Marina lies about 1.1 miles north up Whitehall Creek, and L.J. Marina is around 1.6 miles west. The three creeks feeding the bay have narrow S-curve entrances but carry deep water once inside.
History
At the head of Whitehall Creek stands Whitehall, a five-part Georgian house begun in 1764 for Horatio Sharpe, provincial governor of Maryland. It was the first National Historic Landmark designated in the state, in 1960.
