Guide

Approach and anchoring

Access via the Loire channel from Saint-Nazaire or from upstream. Tidal currents up to 2,5 knots at the Nantes reaches. Maximum draught 1,3 m, arrive near slack water. VHF 9. Watch for the Navibus river shuttle crossing to Gare Maritime de Nantes.

Practical

42 berths with water and electricity. Capitainerie run by Rezé. Bakery, butcher and several restaurants in the former fishermen's village at 200 m. Navibus line L7 crosses to central Nantes every 20 minutes.

Ashore

Old sailors' quarter of Trentemoult, colourful houses in narrow lanes built by Newfoundland and coastal captains from the 18th century. Île de Nantes, Machines de l'Île and the mechanical Grand Éléphant at 2 km across the river by Navibus. Memorial of the Abolition of Slavery on the Nantes quay at 1,5 km.

History

Trentemoult was a village of Loire pilots, long-distance captains and Newfoundland cod fishermen. The sailors built tall narrow houses and brought back plants from their voyages, giving the quarter an unusual mix of architectures and garden species.
