Type
Harbour

Working boatyard on Chisman Creek near Yorktown, Virginia, where boats are hauled out on a rail-mounted cradle.

Guide

Approach and anchoring

Reached from the York River through Chisman Creek. The yard sits on Railway Road, with Dare Marina close to the north-east.

Practical

A haul-out and repair yard rather than a marina for berthing. Boats are lifted from the water by a cart running on rails and shunted ashore into a timber cradle for work. The yard handles around 20 boats.

History

The Smith family settled at Dare in 1840 for its waterfront and timber. Seven generations have worked the yard, which has run for over 180 years and is among York County's oldest businesses.
