Small marina at Ewell on Smith Island, Maryland's only inhabited Chesapeake Bay island reachable by boat, about 12 miles west of Crisfield.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach Ewell through the Big Thorofare channel from the east. Reported channel depths run five to seven feet, but shoaling can occur at any point, so motor in slowly. A keel boat drawing 4.5 feet may not reach the inner berths at low water.
Practical
Six berths on rebuilt docks, with 30 and 50 amp shore power. There is an air-conditioned lounge with two heads and showers. A shed sells snacks and ice on an honour system with a cash box and Venmo.
Ashore
Ewell village is a short walk from the docks, along with the Smith Island Cultural Center on the local watermen's community. The island gives its name to the Smith Island cake, the official state dessert of Maryland.
