- Harbour
Marina on Tangier Island, a watermen's community in the Chesapeake Bay roughly 12 miles offshore in Virginia.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached by a marked channel from the Chesapeake Bay to the island harbour. Tangier rises no more than about 5 feet above low water, so landmarks are low. The deep water berths take power boats, sailing yachts and working craft.
Practical
Berths with shore power and water on the working harbour. The village is car-free, crossed by bicycles and golf carts. Shops, crab houses and restaurants are within walking distance.
History
Tangier was charted by Captain John Smith's crew in 1608. The British built Fort Albion here during the War of 1812. From the 1840s the island economy shifted from farming to crab and oyster harvesting, and Tangier is known as a soft-shell crab landing port for the Chesapeake.
