Approach and anchoring

Approach from Tangier Sound on the bay's eastern shore. The harbour is sheltered by land on three sides.

Practical

515 slips including a transient floating pier, around 150 of them for visitors, taking boats up to 150 feet. Launching ramps, modern bath houses, laundry rooms, pavilions and swimming pools. Owned and run by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

Ashore

Crisfield's downtown is built on packed oyster shells dumped into the marsh around 1900. Passenger ferries run from the city dock to Smith Island and to Tangier Island, Virginia. The town is known for its Chesapeake crab and seafood trade.

History

Massive oyster beds found in Tangier Sound in 1854 drew watermen to the settlement then called Somers Cove. The Eastern Shore Railroad reached it in 1866, and on incorporation in 1872 the city was renamed Crisfield after John W. Crisfield.
