Approach and anchoring
Freshwater lake, no tides. Approach from the western shore, sand bottom throughout. The prevailing WSW ocean wind funnels across the lake and raises a short chop, so protection from N, W, NW and SW is partial. Watch for seaplane activity linked to the Latécoère historic airbase and for summer watersports zoning.
Practical
Sand bottom, holding good in light conditions. No services at the anchorage itself. Port Siblu at Gastes lies 1.5 nm SE and Port Les Sandres 1.8 nm E for water, fuel and provisions.
Ashore
Landes maritime pine forest on the shore, crossed by the Vélodyssée cycle route EuroVelo 1. Gastes village has a bakery and a small supermarket 1 nm east. The Hydravions museum at Biscarrosse, at the northern end of the lake, documents the 1930s transatlantic seaplane service.
History
The lake hosted the Latécoère seaplane base from 1930, used for test flights of the Latécoère 521 and 631 transatlantic flying boats.
