Approach and anchoring

Enter the gulf from the SE between Punta di a Chiappa and the Cerbicale islands. Mixed rock and sand bottom, pick a clear sandy patch away from posidonia meadows. Sheltered from SE and S. Open and rough with libeccio from the W and SW.

Practical

No harbour services at the anchorage itself. Small pontoon of Sant'Amanza 1.8 NM SW for tenders. Bonifacio marina 4.7 NM SW for fuel, water and full supplies.

Ashore

White sand beach of Maora and beach of Balistra on the west shore of the gulf, reachable by tender. Windsurf and kitesurf centre at the head of the gulf, the bay being a recognised spot for W winds. GR20 trailhead area further inland via road from Bonifacio.

History

The gulf is part of the Natura 2000 site of the Bouches de Bonifacio, which extends across the strait to La Maddalena in Sardinia and forms one of the largest marine protected zones of the Mediterranean.
