Anchorage off Beach Point at the tip of Sandy Neck, the barrier beach at the entrance to Barnstable Harbour, Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Enter from Cape Cod Bay at the red-and-white BH bell buoy and follow the marked channel; the flats off Beach Point and the lighthouse are very shallow with strong currents. The bar channel shifts continually, so seek local knowledge before standing in. Good holding in mud once inside, and lobster pots lie off the entrance. Barnstable harbourmaster works VHF 9.
Practical
Open anchorage with a mud bottom, sheltered from north-west through east. Sandwich Marina lies 10.2 nautical miles to the west and Chatham Yacht Basin 13.9 nautical miles east for fuel and full services.
History
The first Sandy Neck light was built in 1826, a wooden tower rising from the keeper's house. It was replaced in 1857 by the 48-foot brick tower that still stands, decommissioned in 1931 as the shoreline shifted. A restoration committee relit a replica lantern in 2007, on the tower's 150th anniversary.
