Approach and anchoring
Gibson Island lies at the mouth of the Magothy River, off the Chesapeake's western shore. The cove gives good all-round shelter except from the north and north-east. The bottom is sand and holds well. Gibson Island itself is a private community reached only by a causeway.

Gibson Island Boat Works is 0.3 nm south for repairs and hauling. Hammock Island Marina lies 2.3 nm north. New Bern, Baltimore and Annapolis are all within an hour by road.
