Approach and anchoring
Reached via the canalised Deûle, part of the Dunkerque-Escaut large-gauge network. The river carries commercial barge traffic, keep to the starboard side and watch for péniches at the bends. Locks at Grand Carré and Don are VHF 20. Air draught roughly 5.25 metres under the city bridges.
Practical
Free public quay moorings along the quais in the Wazemmes and Bois-Blancs area. No dedicated services. The nearby port de plaisance du Grand Carré offers water, power and berths on a paying basis at around 1 km.
Ashore
Vieux-Lille quarter with its 17th century brick and stone facades at 1.5 km. Palais des Beaux-Arts, the second largest fine arts museum in France, at 2 km. Wazemmes covered market on Sunday mornings at 800 metres. Citadelle de Vauban, built 1667 to 1670, at 1.2 km walk along the ramparts.
History
Lille was fortified by Vauban after Louis XIV captured the city from the Spanish Netherlands in 1667. The Deûle has been canalised since the Middle Ages and became a major coal and textile artery during the 19th century industrial boom.
