Approach and anchoring
Reached via the Deûle canal, itself connected to the Escaut and to the Liaison Dunkerque-Escaut network. Gabarit Freycinet, locks on either approach. No tide, controlled level. VNF traffic includes commercial barges, stay to starboard.
Practical
Pontoons with water and electricity, fuel station listed. Lille city centre and main station Lille-Flandres within 15 minutes on foot.
Ashore
Vieux-Lille quarter at 500 m with the Vieille Bourse of 1653 and the rue de la Monnaie. Palais des Beaux-Arts on place de la République, 1,5 km south. Citadelle de Vauban from 1670 and its park adjoin the port on the north bank.
History
The Deûle was canalised in stages from the Middle Ages and Lille grew as an inland port for Flanders textiles. Vauban built the Citadelle next to the river between 1667 and 1670 after the French conquest of the city.
Story
The Citadelle of Lille is still an active military base, headquarters of the Corps de Réaction Rapide-France of NATO.
