Guide
Approach and anchoring
Approach from the west across the Golfe d'Ajaccio. Keep south of the Îles Sanguinaires on entry to the gulf. The mooring is exposed to the east, southeast, south and southwest, so it is tenable mainly in prevailing westerly to northwesterly weather. Look for sand patches between the algae to set the anchor cleanly. No VHF service at the mooring.
Practical
No pontoon services on the mooring. Port Tino Rossi in Ajaccio lies 2.9 nm to the NW with fuel, water and electricity. Dingy Dock 3.3 nm NW gives tender access to Ajaccio town. Shops, restaurants and the Marina Viva complex sit on the Porticcio beachfront directly inshore.
Ashore
Plage de la Viva and Plage d'Agosta stretch for about 3 km along the Porticcio shore, with sand and shallow water. The Tour de Capitello, a Genoese watchtower from 1554, stands on the headland 1.5 km north of Porticcio. Ajaccio old town and the Maison Bonaparte museum are reachable by tender to Port Tino Rossi.
History
Porticcio faces Ajaccio, birthplace of Napoléon Bonaparte in 1769. The Genoese watchtowers along the gulf, including Capitello and Castagna, were built in the 16th century against Barbary raids. The resort itself developed from the 1960s as Ajaccio's seaside extension.
