Approach and anchoring

Approach from the north in clear water along the cliffs of Belle-Île. Bottom is sand mixed with algae, drop in a clear patch of sand for reliable holding and check the set before leaving the boat. Shelter from north through north-east to east, open to the west and the south-west swell that wraps around the island.

Practical

No services at the anchorage. Port du Palais at 4.6 nautical miles north-west for a secure berth, fuel, water and all town services. Sauzon at 7.3 nautical miles north-west for the drying harbour and restaurants.

Ashore

The anchorage takes its name from the short-lived settlement founded in 1765 by Acadian families deported from Nova Scotia and resettled on Belle-Île after the Treaty of Paris. Ruins of the Acadian farms and a memorial stand behind the beach. The GR 340 coastal path crosses the site and links it to Locmaria further east.

History

After the fall of French Acadia in 1755, about 78 Acadian families were relocated to Belle-Île in 1765 and founded several hamlets, one of them named Port-York in memory of their passage through the British colonies. Most of the original buildings have gone but the field pattern laid out in 1766 is still visible from the cliff path.
