Approach and anchoring

Approach from the east in clear weather. Bottom is mixed sand, rock and weed, so drop on a sand patch visible through the water. Shelter from N and NW only. Exposed to E, SE and S swell. Port du Palais lies 3.2 NM north as the nearest all-weather refuge, Sauzon 4.8 NM north.

Practical

Anchorage only, no moorings and no services. The nearest shops and water are in Locmaria village, inland from the Port de Locmaria inlet. Fuel, chandlery and repairs at Le Palais.

Ashore

Grand Village beach is a short dinghy ride or walk from the landing. The GR340 coastal path passes along the clifftops and leads north to the Aiguilles de Port Coton rocks at about 6 km. Locmaria church, the oldest on the island, is 1 km inland.

History

Belle-Île was bought by Nicolas Fouquet in 1658 and fortified by Vauban. The island was briefly held by the British in 1761 before being returned to France in 1763 under the Treaty of Paris.
