Port Norris Marina
- Type
- Harbour
Launching marina on the Maurice River at Bivalve, Commercial Township, New Jersey, on the old Delaware Bay oyster grounds.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
On the lower Maurice River off Delaware Bay. River markers are unofficial and shifted to follow the channel, so a rising tide eases the approach. The marina lies off Miller Avenue.
Practical
A launching point for boats heading out on the Maurice River to fish and crab. Commercial crabbing and net fishing still work out of the surrounding docks.
History
Bivalve and the neighbouring Shell Pile were the centre of the Delaware Bay oyster trade. A railway spur reached Bivalve in 1875, and oysters were shipped out by the boxcar in the shell. The Bivalve Oyster Packing Houses and Docks survive from that era.
