Approach and anchoring
Exposed harbour on the Baie de Quiberon, entrance facing south. Shelter from W through N. Rough in strong SE wind. VHF 9 for the capitainerie. Visiting yachts are directed to Port-Haliguen for overnight berthing as Port Maria is dedicated to fishing fleet and ferry traffic.
Practical
Limited visitor capacity. Water and power on the small visitors' pontoon when available. Fish market on the quay in the morning. Bakeries, supermarket and SNCF station within 500 m in the town of Quiberon.
Ashore
Grande Plage sandy beach at 300 m. Compagnie Océane ferries leave Port Maria for Belle-Ile-en-Mer, Houat and Hoedic. Côte Sauvage cliffs and footpath start 1.5 km west of the port, running 8 km along the Atlantic facade of the peninsula.
History
Port Maria grew on the sardine trade and tinning industry in the 19th century. The sardine canneries of Quiberon employed several hundred women until the 1960s. The port today lands mainly line-caught bass and spider crab.
