Approach and anchoring
Entry from the Seine at the downstream end via a lock at the foot of Place de la Bastille. Lock operates on request, VHF 9. Max draught 1.9 m. Upstream, the basin connects to the Canal Saint-Martin through another lock.
Practical
177 berths managed by the Mairie de Paris. Water and electricity on the pontoons. Toilets and showers ashore. Metro Bastille lines 1, 5 and 8 at the top of the basin.
Ashore
Place de la Bastille and the July Column at the northern end, 100 m from the basin. Opéra Bastille alongside the square. Marché d'Aligre covered and open-air market on rue d'Aligre, 600 m south. Le Marais district across the Seine, 15 minutes on foot.
History
The basin was built between 1806 and 1825 under Napoleon, linking the Seine to the Canal Saint-Martin to supply Paris with drinking water and goods. It stands on the site of the Bastille fortress, demolished in 1789.
Story
The lock gates open directly beneath Place de la Bastille, passing under the traffic of Boulevard de la Bastille before emerging into the Seine.
