Port Van Gogh
- Type
- Harbour
Seine river marina on the left bank at Asnières-sur-Seine, in the inner suburbs of Paris, at PK 34.
Guide
Approach and anchoring
Reached from the navigable Seine downstream of central Paris. Commercial traffic is frequent between Paris and Gennevilliers, so yachts keep to starboard and listen on VHF 10. No tide. Air draught governed by the pont d'Asnières and the rail bridge of the Ligne de Saint-Germain just downstream. Upstream locks at Suresnes and Chatou open to VNF schedules.
Practical
Pontoons for resident and visiting boats with water and electricity. No diesel pump on site. Full range of shops and restaurants on the quay and in central Asnières within 300 m. Asnières-sur-Seine mainline station connects to Paris Saint-Lazare in 10 minutes.
Ashore
The pont d'Asnières and its banks were painted by Vincent van Gogh and Georges Seurat in 1887, and a signposted heritage walk recalls the painters' viewpoints within 500 m of the port. Cimetière des chiens on the Île des Ravageurs, one of the oldest pet cemeteries in the world founded in 1899, sits 1 km north.
History
The port takes its name from Vincent van Gogh, who lived with his brother Theo in Paris between 1886 and 1888 and painted several canvases along the Seine at Asnières, including Bridges across the Seine at Asnières now held at the Fondation E.G. Bührle in Zurich.
