Guide

Approach and anchoring

Drying harbour accessible HW +/- 2h30 for a 1.5 metre draught. Buoyed channel runs across the sands from the sea, requiring careful bearings at low water. Maximum draught in the basin 1.8 metres. VHF 9 for the harbour office. Strong tidal streams in the Déroute channel offshore; best timed on the rising tide.

Practical

330 berths on pontoons, drying alongside at low water springs. Water and electricity at each berth. Sanitary blocks with showers. Bakery, small supermarket and restaurants within 400 metres in Portbail village. No dedicated fuel berth; nearest fuel at Barneville-Carteret 4 nautical miles north-west.

Ashore

Medieval bridge of thirteen arches crosses the estuary at the entrance to the village, leading to the Romanesque church of Notre-Dame. Remains of a paleochristian baptistery from the 6th century survive nearby. Beach of Lindbergh, named after the aviator who reportedly landed there in 1937, lies 1 km west of the port.

History

Portbail was a Gallo-Roman harbour on the Saire-Ollonde estuary. The paleochristian baptistery, discovered in 1956, is one of the oldest Christian monuments in Normandy and dates from the 6th century.
