Anchorage off the west coast of the Cotentin peninsula in Normandy, south of Barneville-Carteret and north of Port-Bail-sur-Mer.

Approach and anchoring

Tidal coast with a range exceeding 10 metres on springs; plan the approach around high water. Mixed bottom of sand, rock, weed and mud, so choose a clear sand patch and check the set of the anchor. Shelter from N through NE to E behind the coast; fully exposed to the prevailing westerlies and to the residual swell of the Channel.

Practical

Day use only, drying or near-drying at low water on springs in places. No facilities. Port-Bail-sur-Mer 6 nm N is a tidal harbour entered around HW; Barneville-Carteret 9.8 nm NW offers a marina with lock access.

Ashore

Long sand beaches of the west Cotentin run for several kilometres along the coast. The GR 223, the sentier des douaniers of the Cotentin, follows the shoreline with views across to the Channel Islands of Jersey and the Écréhou reef in clear weather.
